Signs and symptoms of toxic overload

Did you know we are exposed to several toxic chemicals on a daily basis? Numbers can be up to 500,000 a day! They can be found in the air that we breathe, water supply, food that we eat, self-care products, and cleaning supplies just to name a few.

Even though exposure can be minimal, these toxins accumulate on our bodies. Once the body has had enough and can no longer take on the burden, physical symptoms manifest. Do any of these signs sound familiar?

  • GI issues such as constipation, diarrhea, bloating or severe gas
  • Brain fog
  • Chronic headaches
  • Fatigue or low energy
  • Aching joints or muscles
  • Skin breakouts or rashes
  • Discoloration or brittle nails
  • Dry unhealthy hair, even hair loss
  • Weight gain
  • Mood swings or irritability
  • Body odor
  • Sugar cravings

If so it may be time to detox!

Gut-Brain-Skin-Connection

Toxicity overload has been linked to nearly every disease including dementia, food allergies, auto-immune disorders, heart disease, obesity, and digestive issues. Emerging evidence has developed in what we call the gut-brain-skin axis. These axes communicate and work together to help fight off toxic overload and keep bodies healthy. Detoxing is a vital component in keeping this connection working at optimal levels. It is necessary for healing and disease prevention.

Tools for success

Detoxing is not easy, sometimes your symptoms will get worse before they get better. Think about your why? Why do I want to detox? You may want to loose a few pounds, be more energetic, or even resolve some inflammation that is causing pain. Whatever the reason is you need to remind yourself daily of the why. This will keep you motivated and successful during your detox.

Timing is everything. To prepare yourself for the transition into detox mode start by scheduling it in your calendar. This will help to hold your self accountable and decide if the time is right. So not start a detox if you are under a lot of stress, super busy, or right before a vacation. Give yourself time to implement and embrace the detox so that you can make the necessary changes to healthier habits.

  • Reduce caffeine and other stimulants
  • eliminate alcohol
  • eliminate processed foods, refined sugar, and fast food
  • reduce dairy intake
  • increase hydration
  • increase your consumptions of fresh fruits and vegetables
  • prepare supplements

Herx reaction is short for herxheimer reaction, simply put detox symptoms. It is the body’s adverse response to toxins released by bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungus when they are killed or die off. Not everyone will have these reactions, and severity is based on each individual’s toxic burden. Here reactions can last 48 - 72 hours and up to 2 weeks. If you experience Herx reactions that best way to navigate through the reaction is to listen to your body. Your body will tell you everything you need to know. Test symptoms as they arise and slow down if you need to. Slow and steady wins the race. Remember detoxing to be bearable or you will quit.

Common Herx Reations

*Headaches

  • Severe Fatigue
  • Cold or flu-like symptoms such as body aches/pain, fever, sore throat
  • increased mucus
  • increased body odor
  • Cold / hot sweats
  • Skin flushing
  • moodiness and irritability
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea or constipation

Ways to Reduce Herx Reactions

Oil pulling

Oil pulling has been used for centuries as a morning ritual to remove toxins that have accumulated in you mouth. It digs down deep to areas where tooth brushing and floss can’t reach. Start with 1 tablespoon of organic coconut, olive, or sunflower oil and swish in your mouth for 5 minutes working your way up tp 20 minutes a day.

Dry brushing

Dry brushing before you take a shower opens up pores on your skin to allow the body to expel toxins. Start by brushing the bottom of your feet, working your way up your leg with long smooth strokes. A good rule of thumb is to brush toward your heart where lymph flows and drains. Bathe as normal.

Detox baths

Detox baths go beyond just soothing. it is a gentle healing therapy that helps to support our body’s natural detoxification process. Ingredients like Epsom salt, raw apple cider vinegar, and essential oils in a warm bath help to relax the mind and prep the body for a good nights rest.

Nantucket, with its misty harbors, salt-kissed breezes, and centuries-old charm, has always been a place where history whispers through every weathered shingle and cobblestone street. This spring, one of the island’s most beloved landmarks, the Veranda House, will once again welcome guests, rising from the ashes of a devastating 2022 fire that necessitated a complete rebuild. Set to reopen in spring 2025, the new Veranda House is a masterpiece of restoration and reinvention. Owned by Procaccianti Companies and managed by TPG Hotels & Resorts as part of the Nantucket Resort Collection, the rebuild was meticulously overseen in collaboration with the town and historic district commission to ensure that the property retained its original federal-style elegance while incorporating modern luxuries and state-of-the-art amenities. First built in 1684, the Veranda House has stood as a symbol of Nantucket’s rich maritime legacy, its wraparound porches offering a front-row seat to the island’s ever-changing seascape. The new design remains true to its original size, scale, and architectural character, seamlessly blending historic integrity with contemporary comforts. Guests will find spa-like ensuite baths in every room, featuring Carrara marble, custom fixtures, and sleek walk-in showers—a nod to modern indulgence without sacrificing classic charm. The 19 redesigned rooms, including the Grand Harborview King with its private balcony and fireplace, exude an intimate, serene luxury. Expanded outdoor gathering spaces now offer even more opportunities for guests to soak in the island’s ambiance, whether sipping coffee at sunrise or toasting the golden hour over Nantucket Harbor. “This reopening marks a significant mile- stone, not just for Veranda House, but for the entire Nantucket community. We are deeply thankful for the community’s unwavering support in bringing this iconic property back to life,” says Paul Hitselberger, EVP of Operations for TPG Hotels & Resorts. The Veranda House is not just a recon- struction—it’s a resurrection, a tribute to Nantucket’s ability to endure, evolve, and enchant. Its doors reopen as a beacon of timeless hospitality, welcoming travelers to a place where history is honored, and every detail—from the breezy verandas to the handcrafted interiors—tells a story. For those who love Nantucket, the Veranda House is a homecoming. Images courtesy of The Veranda House.
