THE ARRIVAL OF A MASTERPIECE: MARTELL’S L’OR RÉSERVE DU CHÂTEAU DE CHANTELOUP

MARTELL’S L’OR RÉSERVE DU CHÂTEAU DE CHANTELOUP

The glimmer of gold, the allure of luxury, and the sophistication of an exclusive spirit. Martell, the renowned cognac house, has unveiled a limited edition of its exquisite L’Or Réserve du Château de Chanteloup in the United States. But the real talk of the town is an even rarer gem: Les Remarquables de Martell. This single bottle of cognac is expected to fetch an astounding one million euros, or nearly $1.1 million, potentially making it one of the most expensive cognacs ever produced, rivaling the legendary Henri IV Dudognon Heritage bottle, which sold for almost $2 million in 2008. The value of a single bottle of cognac can be quite subjective, influenced heavily by exclusivity and craftsmanship.

Les Remarquables de Martell stands out due to its exceptional heritage and meticulous production. Crafted by cellar master Christophe Valtaud, this unique blend combines two rare eaux-de-vie from the Grande Champagne cru, each distilled over 70 years ago. These precious spirits were initially aged in the historic cellar of Port du Lys, a cellar dating back to the 1700s, before being transferred to the prestigious Réserve du Fondateur of the Martell house.

The first eau-de-vie in this blend is slightly older, offering complex cedar notes and an intense, lingering finish. The second complements it perfectly, creating a harmonious balance that speaks to Martell’s dedication to excellence. The result is a cognac that exudes power, tension, and extraordinary length on the palate. A cognac of such prestige deserves an equally remarkable presentation. Les Remarquables de Martell is encased in a stunning artistic reproduction of a dame-Jeanne, the traditional glass demijohn used for cognac storage. Laurentine Perilhou, celebrated for her macrame artistry, adorned the bottle with gold thread, symbolizing the journey of the vine from its roots to the sun-drenched grapes. “From the Earth to the Sun, from the roots in the soil to the vine leaves turned upwards to the light,” she explained, “I aimed to make the invisible visible.”

Adding to the opulence, the bottle features a diamond set in 22-carat gold and three synthetic sapphires. It is housed in a luxurious wooden cabinet, accompanied by six Baccarat crystal glasses, a pair of white gloves to ensure the decanter remains pristine, and a macrame neck decoration. For those lucky enough to acquire this masterpiece, the experience extends beyond the bottle. The purchase includes a private tasting session with Christophe Valtaud, where you can choose to add another eau-de-vie to the blend, tailoring it to your preference. Additionally, Martell and Valtaud will host several exclusive events that you and three guests can attend, providing an unforgettable journey into the world of fine cognac. Intrigued? Nantucket, with its misty harbors, salt-kissed breezes, and centuries-old charm, has always been a place where history whispers through every weathered shingle and cobblestone street. This spring, one of the island’s most beloved landmarks, the Veranda House, will once again welcome guests, rising from the ashes of a devastating 2022 fire that necessitated a complete rebuild. Set to reopen in spring 2025, the new Veranda House is a masterpiece of restoration and reinvention. Owned by Procaccianti Companies and managed by TPG Hotels & Resorts as part of the Nantucket Resort Collection, the rebuild was meticulously overseen in collaboration with the town and historic district commission to ensure that the property retained its original federal-style elegance while incorporating modern luxuries and state-of-the-art amenities. First built in 1684, the Veranda House has stood as a symbol of Nantucket’s rich maritime legacy, its wraparound porches offering a front-row seat to the island’s ever-changing seascape. The new design remains true to its original size, scale, and architectural character, seamlessly blending historic integrity with contemporary comforts. Guests will find spa-like ensuite baths in every room, featuring Carrara marble, custom fixtures, and sleek walk-in showers—a nod to modern indulgence without sacrificing classic charm. The 19 redesigned rooms, including the Grand Harborview King with its private balcony and fireplace, exude an intimate, serene luxury. Expanded outdoor gathering spaces now offer even more opportunities for guests to soak in the island’s ambiance, whether sipping coffee at sunrise or toasting the golden hour over Nantucket Harbor. “This reopening marks a significant mile- stone, not just for Veranda House, but for the entire Nantucket community. We are deeply thankful for the community’s unwavering support in bringing this iconic property back to life,” says Paul Hitselberger, EVP of Operations for TPG Hotels & Resorts. The Veranda House is not just a recon- struction—it’s a resurrection, a tribute to Nantucket’s ability to endure, evolve, and enchant. Its doors reopen as a beacon of timeless hospitality, welcoming travelers to a place where history is honored, and every detail—from the breezy verandas to the handcrafted interiors—tells a story.
