The Transformative Lens of Shelli Breidenbach

A brown horse with a long mane is standing in front of a black background.

This fall, we introduce you to the stunning work of renowned fine art photographer Shelli Breidenbach, a visionary who has redefined equine photography with her elegant and modern approach. Known for her minimalist elegance, Breidenbach’s work captures the majestic beauty of horses in a way that transcends traditional portraiture, offering a fresh narrative that is both captivating and timeless. Her stunning cheetah image, which graces the cover of this issue, captivated us from the moment we first saw it. Breidenbach seamlessly captures the raw beauty and grace of her subjects.

Breidenbach’s signature style places these noble creatures against dynamic black, white, and vibrant backdrops, creating a striking contrast that highlights their natural elegance.

Shelli's journey from Wall Street to the world of photography is as inspiring as her work. It all began on a family trip to South Africa, where her love for animals and her passion for photography blossomed. "Africa had a huge impact on me. It made me love wild animals even more, taught me to respect their space and homes, and overall, it made me realize the importance of caring for our environment," she recalls.

Among her most thrilling experiences was a high-flying adventure in Casa de Campo, where she captured polo players in action from a helicopter, a feat as daring as it is breathtaking. "Hanging out of a helicopter with no doors was definitely a challenge, but the results were worth it," she reflects, proving once again that Shelli is anything but conventional.

Breidenbach’s approach to equine photography is uniquely her own, often described as equine minimalism. She captures horses without tack, set against meticulously chosen backdrops that allow their forms and movements to take center stage. "I started by placing a hand-painted burlap behind the horses to eliminate distractions and focus solely on the beauty and athleticism of the horse," she explains. This technique strips away the extraneous, leaving the viewer to marvel at the raw elegance of the animal.

Despite beginning her career in fashion photography, Shelli’s passion for horses naturally led her towards equine photography. Each click of her camera preserves moments of profound connection between horse and human, reflecting her deep love for these magnificent creatures. Her transition from fashion to equine photography was not just a professional shift but a personal journey driven by her desire to share the beauty of horses with the world.

Breidenbach’s relationship with her equine subjects is at the heart of her work. Though she didn’t delve into competitive equestrian events until adulthood, her passion for horses has always been a guiding force. "As a rider, my true passion led me to spend the majority of my time simply being with horses in the barn. That's where I felt most connected and where I chose to channel my energy," she says. This deep connection is evident in every photograph, where the trust between photographer and subject shines through.

Behind the lens, Breidenbach’s process is as detailed as her final images. From the hand-painted backdrops to the positioning of each horse and the interplay of light, every element is carefully considered. "Every shoot involves building a full set with a massive backdrop and extensive equipment. It's a lot to ask of the animals, so understanding and patience are crucial," she notes.

Her iconic equine photographs have graced the pages of prestigious equestrian magazines and adorned horse show posters, including the Hampton Classic Horse Show in 2021. As she continues to leave her mark on the world of equestrian photography, Shelli finds peace and inspiration in her own sanctuary. "I bought a property six years ago and brought my retired horse home. Eventually, I added more animals, including mini ponies, sheep, goats, and even a pig," she shares. "It's been fulfilling to grow old with my retired horse and spend time with all the animals daily."

As we celebrate the artistry of Shelli Breidenbach,  we are reminded of the beauty that lies in simplicity, the elegance in minimalism, and the profound connection between horse and human that her work so beautifully captures.
